There are quite a few different kinds of mental disorders out there that people suffer from. Some common ones are listed below. Anxiety disorders. Depression. Eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia.
Personality disorders fall into this category as well. It can range from normal to delusional. This is where a person’s emotions, beliefs, and thoughts become so overwhelming that they distort their perceptions and affect their ability to function properly in everyday life. Those suffering from the above often feel depressed or even hopeless. They may have extremely negative mood swings and believe everyone is bad.
The other type of mental disorders that fall under the psychotherapeutic category include clinical depression and psychosis. These are diagnosed after a series of medical evaluations done by a psychiatrist or psychologist. Although these two conditions are very similar in symptoms and occurrence, they are two different problems that require different treatments and methods of treatment. Each has different reasons for existing and only one can be considered a true medical diagnosis.
When it comes to psychoses, people with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder fall into this category. Schizophrenia is a mental disorder where the patient becomes extremely unproductive and is unable to think or function normally. Usually, they will have hallucinations that are highly vivid and come on very quickly. Bipolar disorder, on the other hand, is diagnosed when a person goes through extreme episodes of mania and depression at the same time. When they do, it causes them great difficulties in functioning because they are not capable of having normal conversations. Both of these conditions are extremely serious and require professional help if a person does not want to continue to deteriorate into a psychotic.
In some instances, people who suffer from a psychological disorder such as a mental illness or personality disorder may also experience physical symptoms such as paranoia, mood swings, social withdrawal and/or personality disorders such as bi-polar disorder, major depression and/or obsessive-compulsive disorder. Those who have suffered from any of these conditions may sometimes go untreated, but there are those who get treated successfully. The most common treatment for these conditions is medicine. In some cases, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is also prescribed. An individual may also take medication along with the recommended dosages of medicine to treat their mental illness or psychological dilemma.
Psychological problems and psychiatric illnesses usually do not cause a person to become suicidal. However, suicide is often seen in connection to mental disorders because people with psychiatric issues are usually not treated properly and fail to get the proper social support that they need to get better. In many instances, patients do not seek help and therefore they do end up hurting themselves or others. Those who suffer from mental illnesses need the proper mental support network in order to survive and become productive members of society. They do not have the ability to self-help, but they can always seek the help and support that they need from family members and friends.
According to a recent study conducted by the National Institute of Mental Health, schizophrenia affects approximately 20 million people across the globe. Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that affects a person’s thinking processes and behavior. This condition can be diagnosed when the person has at least two psychotic symptoms that are recognized by doctors as representative of the disease, or when patients show signs of hallucinations, delusions, or other serious symptoms that are significantly disproportionate to their age, intelligence level, social status, occupation, and other aspects of their life.
There are also various types of mental disorders including anxiety and bipolar disorder, which affect a million people every year. These two are the most prevalent mental disorders in America and account for about 5 percent of all the mental disorders diagnosed each year. The most common symptoms of anxiety and bipolar disorder include severe episodes of anxiety and/or depression coupled with physical complaints such as unexplained weight loss, heart problems, and high blood pressure. Many times these types of symptoms are misinterpreted as diseases that require medical attention. However, it is important to note that if someone you know or yourself shows these symptoms it is important to seek medical assistance at once as the earlier a person gets help the better chance they have of getting well.
