Engaging Insights on Youth-Centered Social Media Research

In this enlightening lecture, esteemed experts Dr. Jenny Radesky and Dr. Megan Moreno will delve into innovative, youth-centered approaches to social media research. They will explore how these approaches significantly impact existing frameworks, methods, and the development of relevant products. Attendees can expect to gain valuable insights into how these research methodologies can shape our understanding of youth interactions with digital media.

Dr. Radesky will introduce the DREAMER Model (Dynamic, Relational, Ecologic Approach to Media Effects Research; Barr, Kirkorian, Coyne & Radesky, 2024). This groundbreaking conceptual framework enhances previous research that primarily focused on child “screen time.” By examining the context of media use within parent-child dynamics, the model addresses how media influences both parents and children. It also considers the impacts of media design and socio-economic factors such as poverty and stress on developmental outcomes. Dr. Radesky will also highlight recent studies utilizing the DREAMER Model and its implications for clinical guidance through the 5Cs framework.

Following Dr. Radesky, Dr. Moreno will outline the 5Cs framework tailored for understanding teen media consumption. She will present findings from the Brain, Behavior, and Well-Being project, which investigates the crossroads of adolescent development and digital media engagement. This interdisciplinary initiative, influenced by a Youth Advisory Board, has led to novel methodologies and strategies for conducting social media research specifically targeting adolescents. Furthermore, Dr. Moreno will elaborate on how this project aligns with the 5Cs framework, enhancing our understanding of youth media interaction.
