Essential Insights into the National Advisory Mental Health Council Open Policy Session

The National Advisory Mental Health Council (NAMHC) Open Policy Session serves as a crucial platform for the mental health research and advocacy communities to gain insights into the latest developments and priorities set by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). This session aims to foster collaboration and communication among stakeholders involved in mental health initiatives, ensuring everyone is aware of key updates that can impact research and policy.

Engaging Presentations and Discussions to Expect:

  • Shelli Avenevoli, Ph.D., Acting NIMH Director, will provide the Director’s Update, detailing the current status and future direction of NIMH, NIH, and HHS.
  • Susan Amara, M.D., Scientific Director of the NIMH Intramural Research Program, will share valuable updates on ongoing intramural activities and initiatives.
  • James Churchill, Ph.D., Training Team Co-Lead; NIMH Training Team, will discuss the latest developments regarding NIMH training awards.
  • Rashaun Brown, M.S.N., Clinical Informatics Applications Specialist from the Office of Clinical Research, will present the insightful Triennial Report on the Inclusion of Women and Minorities in NIMH Research.
  • In addition, NIMH programmatic staff will engage in discussions about innovative concepts for potential future funding initiatives.

Guidelines for Submitting Your Written Comments

We encourage participants to submit their written comments to NAMHCPublicComment@mail.nih.gov by 12:00 p.m. ET on February 6, 2025. Please ensure that your comments do not exceed 500 words. While these written comments will be shared with Council members, they will not be publicly posted or shared during the videocast, allowing for an open and honest dialogue.

The NAMHC convenes three times a year to provide expert advice to the Secretary of Health and Human Services, the Director of the National Institutes of Health, and the Director of the NIMH regarding all policies and activities related to mental health research, research training, and other vital NIMH programs.
