Today, we delve into the transformative power of positive language and its profound impact on your mindset and mental health, along with the role fashion plays in this journey. Kimberly Wilkerson, the visionary behind Token Clothing Company™, shares her insights. Stay tuned for a chance to win your very own set of her mindset-enhancing, cozy pajamas.
Pause for a moment and reflect on this: “I am ____.”
How would you fill in that blank? It’s important to remember that what follows “I am” becomes an integral part of your identity.
So, what empowering word or phrase would you place after this powerful three-letter affirmation that shapes your reality?
The Impact of Negative Language on Your Mindset and Mental Well-Being
Recall the childhood saying we often recited when faced with unkind words from peers?
“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”
While we attempted to project bravery with this retort, it concealed a deeper truth. Words can indeed cause harm. They also possess the power to uplift, heal, and catalyze change. In essence, language wields significant influence, and the words we choose hold weight. This influence extends beyond just spoken words; it includes the language we hear in media—TV shows, movies, news reports, podcasts, and more. It’s the words we think, express, and write.
Moreover, it’s the words we choose to wear each day.
As part of this journey, I’m excited to gift a luxurious set of Pajamas With Purpose™ to one lucky reader. Keep reading to discover how you can participate in this giveaway.
Understanding the Detrimental Effects of Negative Language
Consider the powerful two-letter word: “No.”
As discussed in “Words Will Change Your Brain” by Newberg and Waldman (2012), if you were to undergo an fMRI scan while reading the word “no,” you’d observe a notable spike in activity within the amygdala, along with the release of stress-inducing hormones. This physiological response can escalate heart rate and blood pressure, disrupting the normal functioning of brain regions associated with logic, reasoning, language comprehension, and effective communication.
The word “no” carries significance and is essential in certain contexts. For instance, during a fight-or-flight response, our bodies prepare for potential threats, and the corresponding increase in heart rate and blood pressure is vital for survival.
The ramifications of language in these scenarios are profound. The term “no” elicits an immediate neurological reaction that can affect our overall health. Prolonged exposure to negative language correlates with heightened hostility, which is linked to increased rates of morbidity, mortality, depression, and relationship breakdowns.
Harnessing the Benefits of Positive Language for Enhanced Well-Being
Conversely, let’s explore uplifting language. Consider words like hope, optimism, joy, love, gratitude, compassion, truth, peace, humility, and forgiveness.
Using fMRI technology, researchers have shown that focusing on these positive words can calm the amygdala and emotional centers in the brain. Even the word “yes” produces favorable results.
When we focus on uplifting thoughts and affirmations, we stimulate the brain’s motivational centers, which are crucial for initiating action. By consistently practicing relaxation and concentrating on positive language, we can effectively reduce anxiety and depression while minimizing the occurrence of negative, automatic thoughts.
As noted by neuroscientist Andrew Newberg,
“. . . concentrating and focusing on positive thoughts, feelings, and outcomes can be more powerful than any drug in the world, especially when it comes to changing old habits, behaviors, and beliefs.”
(Newberg, 2012, p.35)
The Power of Positive Self-Talk and Affirmations for Mental Health
When we examine the mental health implications of chronic health issues, research highlights the benefits of adopting intentional, positive, self-affirming language practices.
For instance:
- A 2021 study involving individuals with psoriasis demonstrated that a brief self-affirmation intervention significantly improved well-being, reducing depressive symptoms and anxiety at both two weeks and one month following the intervention.
- A 2023 investigation into chronic pain sufferers found that self-affirmations were associated with enhanced psychosocial health, including reductions in depression, anxiety, anger, and social isolation.
- Further research indicates that engaging in positive self-talk and affirmations activates brain systems that restore self-confidence in the face of challenges and lead to improved outcomes in education, health, and relationships that endure for months or even years.
Exploring the Connection Between Language and Water
Before you proceed, consider this: our bodies are composed of approximately 60% water.
Japanese researcher Dr. Masaru Emoto dedicated his studies to examining how language influences the properties of water. His findings suggested that the physical structure of water can be altered by exposure to both positive and negative words.
In his experiments, Dr. Emoto placed written affirmations—such as “thank you,” “love and gratitude,” and “wisdom”—in various languages on containers of water, allowing the words to face the water. After freezing the water, he captured images of the resulting ice crystals. He followed a similar process with negative phrases like “You fool!” and “I will kill you.”
The results revealed that water exposed to negative language formed misshapen and malformed crystals, whereas water subjected to positive words produced beautiful and intricately structured crystals.
Although Dr. Emoto’s work has faced scientific skepticism, the notion that words can influence outcomes resonates with many people.
We should cultivate awareness of the language we use, both in self-talk and in our interactions with others. By committing to intentional language choices each day, we can manifest intentional and positive results in our lives.
Fashion’s Role in Enhancing Mindset and Mental Health
I firmly believe that fashion can play a significant role in this process.
As a speech-language pathologist with expertise in communication and language disorders, I founded Token Clothing Company™ two years ago. Our mission is to leverage fashion as a medium for conveying the science behind language and its effects on mental health. We design products that offer customers a transformative experience, fostering self-love, self-appreciation, and self-confidence.
Given that clothing is a basic necessity and a daily requirement, I, along with other fashion industry leaders, see a unique opportunity to utilize the seemingly mundane act of dressing each day to positively impact mental health and well-being. This effort can create a ripple effect across diverse populations, transcending age, race, ethnicity, and culture.
